Week of May 25

May 30: Tennis Lessons at home

This weekend we wanted to share our last edition of RECREATE REMOTELY with a great outdoor activity!

We have been motived by our partner United States Tennis Association - USTA (Official) with their #NetGeneration which has created many videos to help individuals refresh their tennis skills and abilities while at home to stay active in the outdoors. We challenge you to get out and try some of these skills!

Double Volley: Try this activity to work on hand-eye coordination and control: https://netgeneration.usta.com/us-en/tennis-activity-videos-content/double-volley.html.

Criss-Cross: Work on improving hand-eye coordination while working independently: https://netgeneration.usta.com/us-en/tennis-activity-videos-content/criss-cross.html.

Body Volley: Bounce the ball off the racquet and then off a body part to work on hand-eye coordination: https://netgeneration.usta.com/us-en/tennis-activity-videos-content/body-volley.html.

Serving with a Sock: Use a weighted sock to work on serve techniques: https://netgeneration.usta.com/us-en/tennis-activity-videos-content/serving-with-a-sock.html.

To view the entire collection of videos for tennis tips, tricks and fun activities, visit: https://netgeneration.usta.com/us-en/tennis-at-home.html.

If you are ready to take your skills to the court, visit one of the four parks that are now open with at least one tennis court net (Oakwood, Skyview, Groveland and Rich Valley). Please maintain proper social distancing and remain 6ft. from others.

We hope you get out and enjoy this beautiful weekend!

May 27: National Senior Health & Fitness Day

Silver Sneakers Classic Workout w Fitness Coordinator, Amy

Join Amy for this great low impact workout! The 30 min. class starts with a rhythmic warm-up and progresses to some basic aerobic patterns to improve cardiovascular endurance. The next part of the workout includes a set of safe basic strengthening exercises for each muscle group. Balance is incorporated throughout the workout. The workout concludes with a full body stretch and a few minutes of meditation.

Equipment: This Workout requires a sturdy chair with a back, a ball, block or pillow and a set of weights or full unopened water bottles. Please wear tennis shoes and find a space for adequate movement.

Play our Clue mystery game in your favorite IGH parks!

The mystery will be available from May 22-June 8

Clue: Parks & Recreation Edition

Oh no! One of the Parks and Recreation staff was working on planning and preparing for our programming in July and stole the IGH Parks Facilities key! Our Parks Superintendent Brian found a note that said an unknown staff member stole the key because they can’t wait to reopen and get back to the world of fun!

We need your help to find the missing key!

To solve the mystery, you must figure out who did it, what park they stole it from and their motive for stealing the key.

Get all the top-secret details...Recreate Remotely CLUE Social Media 1080x1080px Opens in new window

Become a detective and join the search team!

Clues will be hidden at Rich Valley Park (1841 105th St. E)

Be sure to maintain proper social distancing and remain at least 6 ft. a part while you are out investigating and please do not touch or remove the clues.

Search for the paper clues all over Rich Valley Park that will mention either a suspect, location or motive that wasn’t used in the crime. This will lead you to the answer to solve the mystery. You will need to walk all around Rich Valley to make sure you don’t miss any evidence.

Solved the Mystery?

Once you figure out the mystery, visit our Facebook Event page and leave a comment on the discussion board. One detective/spy team will be drawn to win a special prize!

Tell us:

  • You solved the mystery
  • How long it took and
  • How many detectives are in your team

Please DO NOT post the answer here, we want to give everyone a chance to figure out the mystery.

Good luck! Have fun! Take care.

Family Boot Camp Series

As many of us safely gather with family to honor and celebrate - here’s a fantastic workout series for you to do together (indoors or outdoors)! This series is safe for ages 7 and older - so it really is family friendly.

Grove Instructor Shannon teams up with her daughter to bring you the Family Boot Camp series! This 30 minute total workout will require some prep to create obstacles and weights (many items should be right in your home, recommendations are in video descriptions). Once you have what you need - get ready to feel the burn together.

Learn to Skate: Off-ice Challenges

We might not be able to be on the ice right now...but that doesn’t mean we can’t practice and prepare those skills from home. We’ve been inspired by our Partner Learn to Skate USA who has created several off-ice challenges over the past few weeks to help members stay active.

Our very own Learn to Skate Instructor Melissa took on a couple of these challenges. You’ll see her demonstrating four figure skating poses and two skating exercises - take a look:

Can you match Melissa? Want to try more? Cool...we are sharing each challenge from Learn to Skate USA with you today! Each one can be completed via a printable PDF!

What are you excited to try first? No matter what you do, we hope you have fun! Take Care.

Mind Body Thursday: Life-force Energy

Today’s Mind Body Thursday focus is life-force energy. Do you know what yours is? Did you know that Mind Body exercise focuses on keeping this life-force or energy in balance?

Is there an area of your body that feels tight? Are things just not going right for you today? Do you need to destress?

Tai Chi and Qigong are practices which help establish and maintain balance with life-force energy. It allows us to slow down and focus on releasing areas of our mind and body that seem to be “stuck.”

Please enjoy a Tai Chi video with Grove Instructor Eileen to warm up the body and then follow with a Qigong video by Grove Instructor Dayne with guidelines for moving with purpose.

Motivation Monday: ROLL with it

We have a great full-body stability ball workout with several circuits that would work well indoors or outdoors...cause sometimes the rain rolls in and you gotta adjust accordingly!

We hope you enjoy and get a little extra bounce in your step (see what we did there). Thanks for rolling with us, IGH.

Complete Stability Ball Workout with Fitness Coordinator Amy Crary

The workout is 45 minutes split between 7 short videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc15PGWQCA5Jf-tCYCueqqg.

Short on time? Each circuit addresses different muscle groups and is 12 minutes or less. Pick the right one for the time you have and the area you want to address the most!

Week of May 11

Mind Body Thursday: Connection

It’s Mind Body Thursday and we are asking "How do we create connection in our lives?" Social distancing leaves us hungry for connection. Masks cover our face when we are out, leaving our smiles hidden from view. Telecommuting and video chats challenge our traditional way of connecting.

Here are some tips to create connection while on a video or call:

  • Utilize positive body language, sit tall, lean in, uncross arms and dress for respect.
  • Minimize distractions: silence the phone/email notices, close the blinds, clear the clutter and if possible close the door to your workspace.
  • Avoid eating or displaying food on a call. Drinking a warm liquid in a mug may create a cozy connection.
  • Take a minute for yourself prior to the call to relax.
  • Start the call with a warm hello and a quick check in with the person/people in the meeting or visit.

Pilates Workout

Pilates is a form of exercise that connects the mind to the body. The mind utilizes the breath to stabilize the core muscles. Stabilization protects your spine from injury and allows you to focus on a specific muscle group. Harnessing this efficient muscle contraction produces great results!

Enjoy this video from Grove Fitness Coordinator, Amy, on the basic principles of Pilates:

Motivation Monday: Endurance

Motivation Monday is all about how we can increase our endurance! Our bodies are amazing machines. They can go the distance. But they are more efficient if we train our muscles to withstand long periods of stress.

High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT is one method we use to condition the muscles in our hearts, lungs and those that support our skeletal structure. HIIT workouts harness the principal of overload.

We use 100% maximal effort for a short period of time and rest for about half to one-third of the time (e.g. max. for 30 seconds, rest for 15 seconds). We repeat this exercise anywhere from 3-10 times and then move on to a new exercise.

Here are some benefits of HIIT:
  1. Repetition= mastery & efficiency
  2. Switching exercises prevents boredom
  3. Time passes quickly
  4. Glucose stores deplete quickly allowing you to burn fat
Endurance Workout
Grove Fitness Instructor, Teri, has created a four-part HIIT workout for you to do at home. Access them in the order listed below for a complete HIIT workout:
1. Warm Up

2. Part I: Ignite

3. Part II: Fire up!

4. Part III: Pushing your limits

5. Part IV: Core and Cool Down

Short on time? Do parts I and II and/or IV. For safety reasons, do not attempt part III without part I & II.

Friends and family Friday: Happy May Day!

May Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. In the US, May Day typically reflects its European roots and celebrates the start of Spring. One of the more popular ways to celebrate is by sharing a May Day flower basket. We have a fun ๐ŸŒทRECREATE REMOTELY ๐ŸŒท activity to build your own May Day baskets and tissue paper flowers to help celebrate...it’s festive and maintains social distancing!

Motivation Monday: Achieving Goals

When thinking of your goal, what is your first objective? Define it and then use the SMART Goal system.

SMART goal setting stands for:

  • Specific - Narrow the scope (Answer who, what, when, where, why)
  • Measurable - How will you measure your success? (Add details, measurements and tracking details)
  • Attainable - What additional resources do you need for success? For example, if you want to start running, focus on a 5K for your goal, rather than a marathon, it’ll feel more attainable.
  • Realistic - Make your goal relevant to you and list the reason why you want to reach it. Back to the running example, if you have never run before, make it relevant to your ability and focus on a 5K rather than a marathon. And think about what you will feel when you accomplish your goal.
  • Timely - Putting a deadline on your goal and set some benchmarks. Tip: Setting a goal for 30 days is long enough to establish a habit. Setting shorter specific goals to reach during the timeline can provide steps in a staircase to the larger goal.

Do you need help setting a goal? Sign up for Virtual Personal Training. For more information email acrary@invergroveheights.org.

Motivation Monday

Today’s Motivation Monday is about strength training and is bringing a Grove class right into your living room!

"The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about."

Why should we invest in our strength?

Our bodies are amazing machines. The muscles balance our skeletal structure and help us move in multiple planes of motion as we move about in our daily routines.

Maintaining our strength helps us prevent injury. Our muscles contract to keep our balance against opposing forces and help keep our bodies in alignment.

After age 30 we lose 3-5% of our lean muscle mass each year. Strength training 2-3 times a week for 30 minutes can prevent this loss.

Strength Training

  • Boosts metabolism. You burn calories and release oxygen from your muscles during and after your workout.
  • Helps improve blood pressure and prevent chronic disease.
  • Releases endorphins which boosts energy level and mood.

Do you need a home strength routine? Contact acrary@invergroveheights.org to discuss Virtual Personal Training.
