City Sewer & Water
Sewer Services
If your sewer backs up, there are a couple of things to do.  If it backs up only after you have run water, the problem is most likely in your system and you'll need to call a plumber.  If your sewer continually backs up, the problem may be in the city section of the sewer system.

Contact Utility Maintenance before calling your plumber.  (651) 450-2565.  We will come out to check if the city section of the sewer is clear.  Regular hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.  After hours and on weekends call Dakota County Dispatch at (651) 322-2323.  There is no charge for this 24-hour service.

Water Services
The city's first Water Treatment Plant began operating in 1998.  Prior to 1998, the city's well water wasn't filtered.  As a result, water flowing through the pipes left iron and manganese mineral deposits in the pipes.

Since the completion of the Water Treatment Plant, the city's water contains chlorine (state law requires the chlorine for health reasons).  Unfortunately chlorine breaks down the old iron and manganese deposits, and this causes discolored water.  The city will conduct regular flushing of hydrants to minimize discoloration.

The best thing you can do is pay close attention to your water quality.  Check the water at the tap and at the washer for discoloration.  If you notice that your water is reddish-brown or yellow, discontinue washing clothes and run fixtures until the water is flushed through the system.

You should also continue to use your existing home-softening systems.  The Water Treatment Plant removes iron and manganese, but it doesn't soften the water.
